Are you looking to add that something extra to your blogs or want to give a client a distinctive look for their blog? Here is a review of a useful plugin that will allow you to create a unique custom login in 4 easy steps.
Creating a custom login will eliminate any blog members’ confusion about signing in to the “correct” blog. I found it especially useful while creating a private employees-only blog that forces “log-in” prior to viewing any content. The “required log-in” was accomplished using Angsuman’s Authenticated WordPress Plugin.
After reviewing a few other custom login plugins and quickly sifting through WordPress core-programs to do the customization via hard-coding, I found that Binary Moon’s Custom Login Plugin handles one very important need. It eliminates the hassle of changing code every time there is a WordPress upgrade.
How does it work? The Login screen is made up of two images: login-bkg-title.gif and login-bkg-bottom.gif (both are located in the wp-admin/images directory). In essence, you will replace these two files with your own unique custom login graphics. BM’s plugin manages the code to display your graphics instead of the default WordPress files.
My only suggestion for improving BM’s Custom Login plugin is to ask Ben to provide several versions of his graphic template. Not everyone uses Photoshop. So, this did add one extra step as I had to convert the .psd template file to .jpg since we use the ‘free’ Paint.net program for graphic work.
Another nice benefit is the ability to get ideas from others that have already used this plugin and added their custom login images to the BM-Custom-Login Flickr group.
How easy is it to create a unique login page? Here’s the 4 easy steps:
- Download BM’s plugin.
- Extract the files to your WordPress plugin directory.
- Create your custom login image … using BM’s Custom Login template included with the plugin.
- Upload your custom login graphics to the BM plugin’s image subdirectory.
Vioala! You now have your own unique Custom Login screen!
