Will WordPress Become A Social Network?

Will WordPress become a social network? Here’s an interesting post from Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg regarding their new hire of the developer of BuddyPress (Backing BuddyPress) and an interview of Matt by TechCrunch’s Erik Schonfeld (WordPress: The Social Network).

This could be an interesting add-on. I especially like what Matt said to TechCrunch about “sharecropping” and “It’s our friends, our time, our connections, our data — it should be our software.”

This sounds to me like Automattic has a strategy to enable its users to create their own Social Networks using WordPress. What do you think?
